“Early in my career I observed the critical role nurses play in patient recovery. My research with cognitive behavioral therapy has proven to have positive results with patients recovering from cardiac disease. It’s a powerful tool for nurses to use to help their depressed patients.”

At UCLA, Professor Doering developed a research program to evaluate the physiologic and psychosocial adaptation of high-risk patients with cardiac disease. She has studied the relationship of inflammatory biomarkers for depression and its treatment in patients recovering from coronary artery bypass graft surgery. Her use of nurses to deliver cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) in depressed patients is unique and innovative. Professor Doering is currently studying heart transplant patients. The benefit of early detection of allograft rejection may allow more timely initiation of medical therapy and reduce mortality from acute rejection. Currently serving as associate dean for Academic and student affairs, Dr. Doering has also been instrumental in the success of the UCLA Acute Care Nurse Practitioner program.
