“Tobacco control is cancer prevention. Nurses can be great champions for behavior change. We are the largest health care profession, we have intimate encounters with patients in all types of settings across all socioeconomic strata, and because we are one of the most trusted and highly regarded professions, our patients look to us for advice. Research has shown that nurses with the proper education can gain the needed skills to support quit efforts of the over 40 million smokers in the US."

Linda Sarna, Distinguished Research Professor, is a Dean Emerita for the UCLA School of Nursing, serving in that role from 2014-2021. She held the Lulu Wolf-Hassenplug Chair in Nursing from 2009 until her retirement in 2021. She served as Chair of the Academic Senate at UCLA from 2012-2013. She will serve as Secretary for the UCLA Academic Senate from 2022-2025.

Early in her career, as an oncology nurse in the 1970s, she watched as many of her patients suffered from lung cancer. Recognizing that nicotine addiction was at the root of their diagnosis, she made the involvement of nurses in tobacco control the focus of her scholarship and professional passion. Dr. Sarna was the lead investigator on an analysis of 27-year smoking trends of participants in the Nurses' Health Study and led a team of investigators in the examination of national smoking trends among health care professions. Dr. Sarna initiated the Tobacco-Free Nurses (TFN) initiative (www.tobaccofreenurses.org), funded by The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, to nationally help nurses quit smoking and promote their role in tobacco control. Dr. Sarna is known internationally for her work with nursing organizations around the globe on policies related to nurses and tobacco control. Her research included testing tobacco control educational programs for nurses in the US, China and in Eastern Europe. In 2013, she led the campaign to implement the policy that made the University of California, Los Angeles campus tobacco-free, the first in the system to do so. 2023 will be the ten-year anniversary of that policy. She continues to be actively involved with the American Academy of Nursing Health Behavior Expert Panel, Tobacco Control subgroup.

Dr. Sarna was the co-founder of the National Clinician Scholars Program (NCSP), a post-doctoral fellowship for nurses and physicians with an emphasis on health services research with sites at Yale, Duke, University of Michigan, University of California, San Francisco, Penn, and UCLA. She served as co-director at UCLA from 2015-2019. She was elected as Chair of the NCSP Board from 2016-2018.

Faculty Research and Clinical Expertise

Research: Dr. Linda Sarna is internationally recognized for her scholarly activities promoting nursing involvement in tobacco control and in her oncology nursing research focused on quality of life and symptoms of patients with lung cancer. As the Principal Investigator for the Tobacco Free Nurses (TFN) initiative, funded by The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, she initiated the first national program to help nurses quit smoking in the US and to promote the role of nurses in tobacco control inaugurating the award-winning TFN Website, www.tobaccofreenurses.org. She was the lead investigator on an analysis of 27-¬‐year smoking trends of participants in the Nurses' Health Study and led a team of investigators in the examination of national smoking trends among health care professions. She led translational research projects to increase nursing interventions to treat tobacco dependence among hospitalized patients in the U.S., China, and Eastern Europe using web-¬‐based educational programs and resources. Dr. Sarna has collaborated with national and international nursing organizations on policies related to nurses and tobacco control, including the American Academy of Nursing, and leading the implementation of a tobacco-free policy at UCLA.
