Academic Programs

Kitasato University

For over 28 years, the UCLA School of Nursing (SON) has participated in an exchange program with Kitasato Nursing School, a private nursing school located slightly southwest of central Tokyo. On alternate years, either a team of faculty and doctoral students from the UCLA SON visit Japan to lecture and participate in faculty- and student-related activities or the UCLA SON receives a group of students and faculty from Kitasato University for summer learning seminars.

In March of 2018, Kitasato hosted the first two UCLA 2nd year MECN students for an international exchange program. The students exchanged clinical nursing skills and knowledge as well as information about the U.S. health care system. An expected outcome is that students will develop a global health perspective. This year, the SON will send an additional two UCLA 2nd year MECN students to participate in the exchange program.  This program has become a highlight for the MECN students as evidenced by a significant increase in applications for the program this year.

In 2018, Kitasato University renewed a long-standing MOU with the UCLA School of Nursing for another five years.  Under the terms of the new MOU, Kitasato will invite SON faculty to deliver specialty lectures at Kitasato and send graduate nurses every other year to audit nursing classes, visit community sites and participate in cultural exchanges with nursing faculty and students.
