New faculty’s scholarly work highlights need for pediatric advanced practice provider leadership pathways

As pediatric healthcare grows increasingly complex, advanced practice providers (APPs) are increasingly called upon to lead across clinical practice, operations, education, and health system management. A new article by Kamala Gipson-McElroy, DNP, APRN, PHN, CPNP-PC, assistant professor of teaching at the UCLA Joe C. Wen School of Nursing, and colleagues Melanie Reynolds and Rebecca Kaviani of Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, examine how pediatric APPs can be better prepared for leadership roles and how organizations can support their development.

Published in the September 2026 issue of The Journal for Nurse Practitioners as part of its Special Section on Pediatrics, “Clinician to Leader: Cultivating Pediatric Advanced Practice Provider Leadership Pathways”, examines the transition of nurse practitioners and physician associates from clinical practice into formal leadership roles. The article highlights that why APPs play a vital role across pediatric settings, many transition into leadership positions without structured preparation, clearly defined career pathways, or dedicated mentorship.

Their work highlights mentorship as one of the most powerful factors supporting successful leadership development. Structured mentorship and sponsorship programs help emerging leaders build confidence, develop decision-making skills, and gain visibility within healthcare organizations. 

Dr. Gipson-McElroy, along with co-authors, identify several areas of focus for APP leadership, including communication, relationship management, emotional intelligence, systems thinking, and diversity advocacy. In pediatric care, leaders also navigate the unique needs of children and families while working across multidisciplinary teams.

Strengthening pediatric APP leadership pipelines require coordinated action from health systems, professional organizations, and educational institutions. By investing in these areas, organizations can better prepare APPs to serve as strategic leaders who improve outcomes for children, families, and the healthcare workforce.
