2017-2019 - Alumni Board of Directors

In 2019, the UCLA School of Nursing will be celebrating the 70th anniversary of its founding. In celebration of this momentous occasion, the School has galvanized a dedicated group of volunteers to re-form the Alumni Board of Directors. Please read their biographies below:


Cathy Ward PhD ’95

Cathy is an experienced nurse executive and researcher, most recently serving as the Chief Nursing Officer at the UCLA Ronald Reagan Medical Center and the Mattel Children’s Hospital at UCLA.  She was responsible for nursing practice and nursing operations in these two hospitals for 18 years, achieving consistent patient satisfaction rankings above the 90th percentile, nurse engagement scores above the 95th percentile and Magnet designation three times.

Tonia Amos-Jones MSN ’96, PhD ’06

Tonia is a native Californian and has been an RN for 28 years. Her doctoral research focused on vulnerable populations, hepatitis in underserved populations and biopsychosocial assessment. She is a career public servant and has worked in the areas of Accreditation, QI, and Patient Safety. She enjoys cooking, actively supporting her local Nurse Practitioner organization, and spending time with family and friends


Peter Anderson BS ’99, MSN ’01

Peter is a BC-FNP and holds Advanced AIDS Certification as an American Academy HIV Medicine Specialist. He provides direct clinical care as an NP in private practice with 5 physician colleagues in the largest primary care practice in West Hollywood, providing men's primary care and HIV/AIDS specialty care to approximately 6000 patients.


Brittani Clark BS ’11, MSN ’16

Brittani is a Certified Pediatric Nurse Practitioner working with Northeast Valley Health Corporation in the Santa Clarita Valley.  She is a former UCLA Gymnastics team member, 2010 NCAA National Team Champion and 2010 NCAA Individual Floor Champion.  Brittani is also in the process of starting a non-profit organization aimed at educating low income families about the importance of exercise and a healthy diet.


Susan Given MN ’84

Susan is a native of Los Angeles.  She received her BS in Biology from the University of Colorado.  She received her BSN from the Saint Louis University Accelerated Curriculum in Nursing.  Her Masters and Post Master degrees in Nursing were completed at UCLA. She has worked with patients with cardiovascular disease for 39 years.  She also has an interest in the care of hospice and palliative care patients.


Megan Guardiano BS ’15

Megan is a Clinical Nurse II for the Labor & Delivery unit of Valley Presbyterian Hospital, where she has been working since March 2016. She was very active as a UCLA student- she served as the President, VP, and Campus Outreach Committee Chair for the Men in Nursing organization, the Alumni Association student representative from 2012-2015, led the 8-Clap and delivered the student speech for her cohort's Commencement.


Sherri Mendelson PhD ’07

Sherri, PhD, RNC, CNS, IBCLC completed her BSN and MSN at University of Illinois and her PhD at UCLA in 2007.  She has worked in all areas of Maternal-Child Nursing.  She is currently employed at Providence Holy Cross Medical Center as Director of Nursing Research, Magnet Program and Professional Role Development.


Isaac Montoya BS ’17

Isaac is a young alum from the recent graduating Class of 2017. He grew up in a small, agricultural border town in the southernmost part of California. Once in LA, he discovered a new found love for hockey and usually does hockey-related activities in his free time. Isaac will be joining the Nursing workforce in the Intermediate Care Unit at UCLA Santa Monica as part of the New Graduate Program this upcoming Fall.


Leslie Kern MN ’79

Leslie received her MN from UCLA in 1979 and her PhD in Nursing from UCSF in 2004. She is now retired from Nursing, but previously worked as a Cardiac Surgery Clinical Nurse Specialist at UCLA and most recently served as Director of Cardiac and Nursing Research at Long Beach Memorial Medical Center. She is currently in her third year as Chair of Women's Philanthropy for the Jewish Federation of Long Beach.
