On Thursday, April 6, 2017 the UCLA School of Nursing welcomed scholarship donors and recipients to the annual Scholarship Appreciation Lunch at the Faculty Center. The event began with a message from the Dean and presentation of the Dean Sarna Fellowship Award to Arneta Finney. We also presented the awards to the following premiere scholarships: the Patti Taylor Scholarship to Robert Ian Espana, the Linida Burnes Bolton Emerging Leader Award to Ashley Louie, and the Dr. Suzette Cardin Ph.D. Scholarship to Wendy Ann Johnson. We also heard from Vanessa Torres, one of the recipients of the AltaMed Scholarship, who spoke about her experience working with AltaMed and traveling to Cuba with the School of Nursing. From all of these exceptional student acceptance speeches, we heard a resounding theme of appreciation for the generous gifts that our alumni and donors have made. To showcase this, our team created a special acknowledgement video for all of our scholarship donors, which you can view here.
Finally, we recognized Helen Shishino and announced a new scholarship in her name, the Helen F. Shishino Centennial Scholars Undergraduate Scholarship. Helen Shishino received her baccalaureate degree from the school of nursing in 1955, the second graduating class. There were only 12 spots open with many applicants and she was accepted. She went on to receive her Master of Science degree in nursing in 1960. We are all so pleased to now be able to offer the Helen F. Shishino Centennial Scholars Undergraduate Scholarship annually to exceptional baccalaureate nursing students who have demonstrated financial need.
