About the Health Center, URM

The UCLA School of Nursing has operated the Health Center at the Union Rescue Mission (http://www.urm.org) since 1983.  The Center, a nurse practitioner managed facility, operates in the Skid Row area of downtown Los Angeles and provides primary health care to the homeless and indigent population on Skid Row.   We see approximately 2,500 patients each year, for a total of 8,000 visits.

Union Rescue MissionScope: The Center manages both acute and chronic illnesses.  Patients are seen on a drop-in basis for a wide variety of health care services including primary care management of respiratory, gastrointestinal and dermatologic conditions.  Health education, case management, medications, diagnostic services and preventive health care services are also provided. The Center is open 5 days per week from 7:30 AM to 4:00 PM.

Funding: The Health Center is part of the National Health Care for the Homeless Program funded primarily by the Bureau of Primary Health Care (http://www.bphc.hrsa.gov/Hchirc/).  Medications and supplies are provided by the Los Angeles County Department of Health Services, while the School of Nursing and the Union Rescue Mission provide cost sharing benefits including space, maintenance, utilities, data management, administration and fund management.

Union Rescue Mission The need for care in the Skid Row area is high, and additional funding opportunities are being explored to increase the number of medical encounters at the Center.
